Born of necessity, Panerai’s most iconic technical features were crafted to withstand the Navy’s most demanding missions, during its era of creating secret watches and instruments for the Royal Italian Navy. Think remarkable luminescence for underwater legibility, exceptional water resistance, robust hand-wound movements with extended power reserves, and resistant construction to endure harsh, trying conditions. This was long before the term “tool watch” even existed in the world of horology.
These innovations have evolved into a distinct design language that’s hard to not be impressed by. At Watches and Wonders (W&W) 2026, Panerai draws inspiration from this technical age of the past to present the Luminor in new avatars that proudly honour its heritage. GMT India takes a closer look at the timepieces…
Luminor 31 Giorni PAM01631
Housed within a 44mm Panerai GoldtechTM case that has a distinctive red hue, this new iteration of the Luminor is powered by the newly developed P.2031/S, a hand-wound skeleton movement, revealing the intricate mechanics within. The movement makes the groundbreaking 31-day power reserve possible. The exceptional calibre, born from the Laboratorio di Idee’s rigorous experimentation with extended power reserve calibres, is a direct result of Panerai’s commitment to pushing horological boundaries.

It highlights how Panerai’s calibre design philosophy is centred on the strategic use of multiple barrels arranged in series, a configuration that helps maximise power reserve. Comprising 276 components and 25 jewels, the month-long power autonomy is achieved through a sophisticated system of four barrels, housing a combined 3.3 metres of mainsprings. This innovation allows the watch to run continuously for 31 days with just 128 crown turns, eliminating the need for specialised winding tools.

The skeletonised structure offers a striking multi-dimensional view of the P.2031/S movement, showcasing the exposed barrels and the technical mastery of the creation, an effect amplified by the sapphire crystal caseback. Panerai’s patented polarised date disc, visible through the 3 o’clock window, ingeniously integrates functionality without disrupting the open-worked architecture. It’s water-resistant up to approximately 100 metres and, like all Panerai watches, has undergone rigorous testing.
A limited edition of 200 pieces, it will be available exclusively in Panerai boutiques.
Luminor 8 Giorni PAM01733
A handsome 44mm-sized tribute to the original 47mm Luminor design of the 1960s, this new timepiece bears all the hallmarks of the unmistakable Luminor design — the robust case, signature crown protective bridge, luminous numerals, and distinctive sandwich dial — while boldly presented in a brilliant Brunito finish.
A Brunito appearance typically draws on the natural ageing found on metal equipment exposed to repeated field use, such as navigational tools and optical housings, showing softened edges, controlled wear, and a shift from deep black to grey where handling was most frequent. Panerai studied this type of surface transformation as part of the R&D process, successfully translating it into a modern treatment that is intentionally worked by hand.

First, a black PVD layer is applied across the steel case. This layer is then reduced through a manual brushing technique that follows a defined direction but allows for small, controlled variations. These variations evoke the way service instruments have aged over time, especially along corners and exposed edges. Each Brunito case differs slightly due to the individual work done on every component. This finishing is paired with a case construction inspired by the iconic Ref. 6152/1 from the ‘60s. The anthracite dial, which features the new circular brushed finishing, pairs perfectly with the Brunito finish.
The Luminor case construction is complemented by a domed sapphire crystal, a design choice that recalls the visual effect of the PLEXIGLAS® used in Panerai’s early dive watches. The open sapphire caseback reveals the hand-wound P.5000 manufacture calibre with eight days of power reserve. The watch is water-resistant up to 300 metres.

Completing the vintage aesthetics is the light brown, straight-cut, vintage-style calf leather strap, which perfectly matches the beige Super-LumiNova®. A black rubber strap is also provided for diving expeditions. PAM01733 will be available in Panerai boutiques starting from June 2026.
Luminor PAM01735 and Luminor Forged Titanium PAM01629
The Luminor PAM01735 and Luminor Forged Titanium PAM01629 draw inspiration from the iconic Ref. 6152/1 from the ‘60s whose case architecture reflects a progression defined by purpose and performance, and the large hand-wound calibres selected for their dependability. Sized at 47mm, both timepieces remain rooted in classic Luminor design from the 1960s while presenting their distinctly modern executions.

While PAM01735, manufactured in steel, offers a more traditional interpretation of the foundational design elements, PAM01629 turns this historical design into a new era watch with innovative forged titanium ― a material first for the Maison ― showcasing how heritage can be excellently reinterpreted. Both timepieces take inspiration from the original volumetric geometry with a true cushion middle case and a flat crown protecting bridge, while sporting slightly slimmer profiles compared with the original. The domed sapphire crystal, a design choice that recalls the visual effect of the PLEXIGLAS® used in 1960s Luminor watches, is also a hat-tip to Panerai’s rich legacy.

The 47mm polished steel case of Luminor PAM01735 is paired with an ivory matte sandwich dial that sports a grainy surface that recalls the matte finish of early references. Its projected brown varnish gradient deepens towards the outer edge and softens at the centre, a nod to the gradual colour transitions seen on historic ‘tropical’ dials. Meanwhile, PAM01629 features an anthracite sun-brushed finish dial that interacts with light to emphasise the tonal movement of the case while the crown has a matte finish.
Both timepieces are powered by Calibre P.3000, which offers a three-day power reserve, and directly recalls the calibres of Panerai’s early dive watches. Proudly on display through the open sapphire caseback, the P.3000 was developed to mirror the structural robustness and dependability of Panerai’s earliest instruments for the Italian Navy.
Luminor PAM01731 and Luminor Destro PAM01732
Both these models are a direct tribute to the Luminor design of the 1960s, celebrating the brand’s origins as a secret supplier of tool watches to the Italian Navy. The Luminor design is proudly preserved, offering Panerai connoisseurs a modern embodiment of the Maison’s enduring military heritage. Luminor PAM01731 and Luminor Destro PAM01732 draw inspiration from past Panerai timepieces, starting from the iconic Ref. 6152/1 from the ‘60s and more recently the Luminor PAM00372 launched in 2011.

Both novelties share core specifications that define their vintage character. The 44mm steel cases are complemented by a domed sapphire crystal, a design choice that recalls the visual effect of the PERSPEX® used in 1960s Luminor watches. The case structure itself combines a polished finish with a brushed crown protective bridge and is water-resistant up to 300 metres. The sapphire caseback is open and reveals the hand-wound P.6000 calibre, a Manufacture movement with a reliable three-day power reserve.
PAM01731’s tobacco-hued dial brings back to the Maison’s portfolio a deep brown tone, which offers the perfect complement to the dark brown straight vintage-style calf leather strap and a second rubber strap in the same hue, making it the ideal companion for diving expeditions. On the other hand, Luminor Destro PAM01732 features a matte blue dial showcasing 12, 3, 6 and 9 numerals, and a clean display with no small seconds — a distinctive interpretation of the Luminor’s visual codes. It’s thoughtfully paired with a light brown straight vintage-style calf leather strap and a second blue rubber strap.
Submersible Navy SEALs AfniotechTM Experience PAM01089
Limited to just 35 pieces, this exceptional timepiece features a case made of AfniotechTM, a metal comprising over 95% hafnium. Panerai specifically chose hafnium for its exceptional physical and chemical properties, including the outstanding resistance to corrosion. This makes the material particularly reliable, as it can withstand challenging environmental conditions that even the best titanium might not survive. This momentous achievement marks a significant milestone in high-tech material research, solidifying Panerai’s position as a driving force in the watchmaking industry. Fittingly, the brand proudly introduces AfniotechTM in this new Submersible timepiece, inspired by the elite U.S. Navy SEALs and the unique experience it offers.

AfniotechTM forms the 47mm sandblasted Panerai Submersible case, adding a singular silver-grey tone with subtle bluish nuances, setting it apart from conventional metals and giving the watch an unmistakable presence. The sandblasted finish is not merely aesthetic; it crucially ensures the watch remains non-reflective underwater. The robust case also features a ‘1000m’ engraving on the lever of its crown protecting bridge, a clear testament to its remarkable water resistance capacity, while its closed case features the distinctive U.S. Navy SEALs logo. Visual details, including a shaded anthracite dial, small seconds inspired by a target at 9 o’clock, and subtle yellow accents, also serve as direct references to Navy SEALs codes.
Visually dominant and function-driven, the unidirectional rotating bezel emerges as a true operational tool. It features key defining elements like a laser-engraved graduated scale, a dedicated 15-minute counter, and distinctive bezel indexes glowing in blue, elements that aid precise timing during the most critical phases of a dive. The case houses the P.9010/GMT automatic calibre, offering a three-day power reserve, a date display, and the indication of a second time zone. The watch comes with a black rubber strap, an ideal choice for even the most challenging underwater operations.
