The Tudor Pro Cycling Team Set to Flaunt the New Pelagos FXD Chrono Cycling Edition at Giro d'Italia

After showcasing its impressive Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024 releases, Tudor has put forth yet another novelty, Pelagos FXD Chrono Cycling Edition (Ref. 25827KN). The new timepiece has been specifically engineered for the riders of the Tudor Pro Cycling Team.

Cycling as a sport and chronographs do share a rich and multifaceted bond spanning practical applications, technological advancements, historical significance, and cultural impact. This synergy continues to evolve as both cycling and chronograph technologies develop, pushing each other forward in pursuit of greater precision and performance. In fact, the world of cycling has benefited greatly from advancements in chronograph technology as these devices have become more sophisticated and tailored to the specific needs of different types of cycling, be it road racing or mountain biking. 

Tudor and cycling races are inextricably linked — in fact, the Pelagos FXD Chrono Cycling Edition will be worn by the Tudor Pro Cycling team at the ongoing Giro d'Italia race. Since its commencement in 1909, Giro d'Italia has been one of the most prestigious and challenging bicycle races in the world, along with Tour de France and Vuelta a España, making up cycling's famed Grand Tours aka GT. It is held annually, primarily in Italy, though it often starts in or passes through other countries. The 2024 edition started on 4 May and will go through a total of 21 stages in Roma, having covered more than 3000 km and concluding on 26 May. Riders will pass through some 20 climbs at different stages.

The new Tudor watch comes in a 43 mm fixed-lug case made of carbon composite and finished in matte black. It's light and sturdy, and comes with a fixed bezel with a precision 60-minute scale and direct-action pushers — no screw-down pushers like the famed Tudor chronograph model, BB Chrono. The blackened titanium crown is also protected by sharp guards (a Pelagos hallmark) and the back is made of solid titanium as well. The primary alteration can be seen on the dial of this Pelagos FXD Chrono Cycling Edition, which has been given a distinctive black and red treatment as well as unique touches on the inner flange. 

A re-calibrated tachymeter scale is printed on a 45-degree rehaut, with the inner ring focusing on cycling speeds rather than on the standard 500-to-60 units per hour found on most motorsport-oriented chronographs. The rest is standard Pelagos FXD, with huge white Snowflake hour, minute, and second hands, accompanied by squared blocks to indicate the hour markers; these are crafted from a luminous ceramic composite. The subdials marking the 45-minute at 3 o’clock and a small seconds at 9 o’clock are also subtly highlighted in red. Then there is a date window at 6 o’clock with a white numeral and black background.

Inside the case is a self-winding Calibre MT5813, a Manufacture Calibre Breitling 01 with a redesigned silicon hairspring and a few minor improvements. This automatic chronograph is COSC-certified (with Tudor's -2/+4 tolerance), runs at 4Hz, and has a column-wheel and vertical clutch design and a comfortable 70-hour power reserve. This model also comes with a bidirectional rotor system and is finished on a single-piece black fabric strap.
