Walk the western tip of the Île de la Cité in Paris in the late 1770s and, within a stone’s throw of Place Dauphine, you’d have passed the workshops of three men who shaped modern horology. Jean‑Antoine Lépine, Ferdinand Berthoud and the young Abraham‑Louis Breguet all had their ateliers within reach of that square; with Breguet being trained under both before establishing his own workshop at the Quai de l’Horloge.

Between them came the thinly cased pocket watch that made Lépine’s name, Berthoud’s marine chronometers precise enough to solve the longitude problem and Breguet’s self‑winding perpétuelle and, later, his tourbillon. 

Even at the birth of modern horology, the great leaps were centred on arguments over rigidity and allowing a little play. That’s where jeu comes into picture, a simple word carrying two meanings. Each pointing to the same paradox: true precision requires a little freedom to move.

Say it to a child in France, and they'll picture a field, a ball and an idle afternoon with no austere plans. Say it to a watchmaker, and they'll picture something almost invisible: the microscopic clearance between two meshing gears. It's the sliver of tolerance that lets a wheel turn freely inside its jewel.

A structure needs just enough give for life to happen inside. Too little jeu and the system locks and its worth is that of a paperweight. Further, the Bauhaus dictum held that form should express function, but in a mechanical watch, form cannot exist without jeu as case, bridges, wheels, all rely on a necessary gap to allow a little play.

How jeu Works in Watchmaking

 "What is essential is invisible to the eye,” wrote the French poet and writer, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, and it holds a deep context in horology. 

Inside a movement, jeu goes by several names in English: play, shake, backlash. All of them undersell how much the mechanics of watchmaking depend on it. A gear train carries energy from the mainspring barrel down to the balance wheel, which passes through the centre wheel, the third and fourth wheels, then the escape wheel. And at each stage, every handoff needs room to breathe.

Side-shake, or jeu latéral, is the sideways wiggle allowed inside a bearing hole. It defends against thermal expansion, daily vibration and small manufacturing imperfections. 

Tooth play, or jeu d'engrènement, is the rotational space between meshing gear teeth. It stops the teeth from jamming on contact. Watchmakers also leave room for lubrication in that gap; fresh oil needs space or it thickens and drags. Without play, friction rises fast. Energy meant for the balance wheel is lost. Too little jeu doesn’t make a watch precise, it makes it stop.

History's Long Game

Alternatively, ‘play,’ in its recreational sense, keeps finding its way back into the workshop. In 1821, a Paris watchmaker named Nicolas Mathieu Rieussec found himself facing an unusual brief: King Louis XVIII, an avid horse-racing enthusiast, wanted precise timing, not merely timekeeping. Rieussec's answer was an ink‑dropping instrument, tested at the Champ de Mars, that gave the sport finish‑line precision and watchmaking the chronograph as we know it.

A century later, a different kind of match forced a newer kind of invention. In the winter of 1930, British officers stationed in India kept shattering their watch crystals during polo matches. Watching from the sidelines, Swiss businessman César de Trey carried the complaint back to Jacques-David LeCoultre, who commissioned the engineer René-Alfred Chauvot to solve it.

Chauvot's answer was a case that could flip on its axis, hiding the dial against a steel back the moment play grew rough. The patent was filed in Paris on 4 March 1931; nine months later, the Reverso came into existence, and horology had its first true sports watch, born, quite literally, out of a game.

The watch itself would go on to need a kind of jeu of its own. By the late 1940s, the Reverso had fallen out of fashion, production had stopped, and its cases sat forgotten in factory drawers for the better part of two decades, until an Italian visitor touring the Jaeger-LeCoultre works spotted the stack and asked about the market back home. 

The manufacture wasn't interested; a new movement, for an old design, felt like an expensive bet. He took one case anyway, had it fitted, sold it, and came back for the rest. The interest that followed was enough to put the Reverso back into production by 1975. Even the object itself, it turns out, needed a little room to sit idle before it could move again.

Seconds That Matter

Play and watches have long shared an intimate relationship, each shaping how we experience time while on a mission. The finest sports watches were never made for those too delicate to use them; they were built to withstand pressure and keep going.

Mountaineering gave Rolex one of its defining stories. In 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay summited Everest wearing prototype Oyster Perpetuals, tested against altitude, cold and pressure no watch had faced before. Rolex launched the Explorer that same year, built directly from what the expedition demanded rather than what a showroom might.

Blancpain Fifty Fathoms

Diving produced an equally exacting brief. In 1952, French naval officers Bob Maloubier and Claude Riffaud were assembling an elite combat-diver unit and couldn't find a watch that survived their missions — legible in murky water, sealed against pressure, precise enough to track oxygen reserves. 

They took hand-drawn specifications to Blancpain's Jean-Jacques Fiechter, himself a diver, who delivered the Fifty Fathoms in 1953. It's widely credited as the first modern dive watch, and its rotating bezel, designed to calculate remaining air, not style points, is still the template every dive watch follows.

Motor racing gave Omega its own turn. The Speedmaster launched in 1957, aimed squarely at drivers who needed a tachymeter scale on the bezel rather than the dial, readable at a glance mid-race. It would take a decade and a NASA contract to become famous for space instead of speed — but it was built, first, for a racetrack. 

For a watchmaker, tolerance is what gives a gear the freedom to turn. Perhaps human progress works the same way: innovation happens when there is room to experiment, compete and venture beyond the known. Be it conquering the moon or exploring the deepest ocean trenches, all with a watch fastened to our wrists.
