The Muppet Diva Now Gets Her Own Timepiece: Oris ProPilot X Miss Piggy Edition
Over the years, watch collaborations revolving around pop culture have grown in importance, often resulting in limited-edition pieces that appeal to both collectors and fans. Aligning with much-loved pop culture figures does enhance brand narratives and strengthen emotional ties that transcend utility. Such collaborations not only increase the exposure and desirability of a watch, but they also offer a fresh perspective on haute horlogerie.
Partnering with The Muppets for the ProPilot X Kermit Edition, Oris has certainly shown the way in this regard. If Kermit is there, can Miss Piggy be far behind? So, continuing its love affair with the popular puppet characters, the watchmaker has now launched the ProPilot X Miss Piggy Edition (Ref. 01 531 7796 4158-07 8 17 05LC).
Miss Piggy, a central character on The Muppet Show, can be called a force of nature, who grew from a one-joke running gag to a multifaceted, three-dimensional personality. She is a prima donna pig who believes she is destined for success and will stop at nothing to achieve it. Her public face exudes feminine charm, yet she may easily become enraged when she believes she has been insulted or thwarted. Kermit the Frog knows this all too well; when she isn't smothering him with kisses, she sends him flying through the air with a karate chop.
The 34 mm time-only ProPilot X timepiece, dedicated to Miss Piggy, has a stainless steel case, a screw-down crown at 3 o’clock with crown guards, and a knurled bezel while still retaining its sharp, angular features. Although ProPilot X is as far from a regular pilot's watch as Miss Piggy is from a barnyard pig, Oris's objective is clear ― it wants wearers to enjoy unadulterated fun. In keeping with Miss Piggy’s taste for bright colours, the hot pink dial is accentuated by a lab-grown baguette-cut diamond at 12 o’clock, sporting a shield symbol on top of it with rectangle hour markers.
An Oris logo sits below the diamond while a ProPilot X logo rests above 6 o’clock. There are stainless steel central hour, minute, and seconds hands. Unlike the Kermit ProPilot X, which displays the frog's smiling visage on the date window on the first of each month, there is no date window on this variant and Miss Piggy’s image does not appear on the dial; no fluorescent substances on the hands and hour markers can be spotted either.
Powering the watch is the automatic Calibre Oris 531, delivering a 42-hour power reserve with stop seconds. Turning the watch over shows a small aperture in the screw-down and mirror-polished caseback with the engraving of ‘Miss Piggy Edition’. This spyhole exposes a picture of Miss Piggy's face, which appears and fades with the rotation of the lilac rotor. The watch is finished on a multi-piece brushed and polished stainless steel metal bracelet with a folding LIFT clasp.
