Panerai Sets Sail at Watches and Wonders 2024 with its Submersible Range
Florentine luxury watchmaker Officine Panerai has showcased its maritime mastery at Watches and Wonders 2024, spotlighting its collaboration with the America’s Cup. Since 2017, Panerai has been a key player in the sailing world, serving as an Official Partner of the renowned competition and sponsoring teams like Oracle Team USA and Softbank Team Japan. In 2019, Panerai further solidified its maritime ties by becoming the Official Sponsor of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli. This partnership reached its pinnacle during the 36th America’s Cup in 2021, held in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf.
“Our association with the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team resonates deeply with Panerai’s maritime heritage and our pursuit of boundary-pushing performance. This partnership is a natural extension of our brand’s core values,” says Jean-Marc Pontroué, CEO of Panerai. In the run-up to the 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona, Panerai has reaffirmed its commitment as the Official Sponsor, joining forces with the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team for the second consecutive edition.
Over six years, Panerai has developed specialised collections inspired by the America’s Cup technologies and catering for the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team's needs. GMT India takes a closer look at these novelties.
The Submersible GMT Luna Rossa Titanio PAM1507
The Submersible GMT Luna Rossa Titanio watch, debuting with the new Super-LumiNova® X2 for enhanced luminosity, pays tribute to the America’s Cup races in Barcelona (August-October 2024). Its 42mm Grade 5 titanium case, 40% lighter and 60% harder than stainless steel, mirrors the Luna Rossa boat's resilience and innovation. Crafted at the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel, this timepiece is water-resistant for up to 500 metres and tested rigorously for durability.
Inspired by Luna Rossa's sails, the GMT hand of this watch complements a blue sun-brushed dial adorned with the Luna Rossa sail decal. Its titanium bezel, featuring a scratch-resistant blue ceramic disc, is built to endure impacts. Green lacquer accents evoke the luminosity of Super-LumiNova® X2 on the indices and the hour hand, while Super-LumiNova® X-1 illuminates the minute hands and the bezel dots. The watch offers two strap options: a bimaterial strap with a red Luna Rossa stripe on blue and a uniform blue rubber strap, blending resilience with style.
At the core of PAM1507 lies the automatic P.900/GMT movement, known for its reliability and three-day power reserve. The P.900 is a compact automatic caliber, measuring 121⁄2 lignes (28mm) in diameter and 4.2 mm in thickness. It features a bidirectional oscillating weight and single barrel for energy storage. With a balance wheel oscillating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, its balance cock ensures stability. The stop-second function allows precise time setting, while the GMT complication with a 24-hour display pays homage to the brand's early models, enhancing usability for tracking multiple time zones.
The Submersible Luna Rossa PAM01565
The Submersible Luna Rossa PAM01565, developed by the Laboratorio di Idee at the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel, is an e-commerce exclusive limited to 300 pieces. Housed in a 42 mm brushed steel case, its unidirectional rotating steel bezel with a black matte ceramic disc enhances resistance to scratches. The bezel, crucial for calculating immersion time, rotates only counterclockwise, complementing the watch's water resistance of up to 300 metres. Powered by the automatic P.900 movement, renowned for reliability, it boasts a three-day power reserve.
The blue sun-brushed dial with a black gradient finish pays homage to the ocean's depths. Adorned with the Luna Rossa decal, it features luminous dot and baton hour markers, a date window at 3 o'clock, and a small seconds subdial at 9 o'clock. Super-LumiNova®-treated hands ensure visibility in all conditions, while the red second hands reflect the watch's sailing spirit. The screwed caseback is engraved with the image of a Slow Speed Torpedo, symbolising the watch's heritage.
Panerai enhances the user experience with an intuitive interchangeability system, allowing effortless strap switching. The bimaterial strap, reminiscent of Luna Rossa, features grey tones with striking red accents, while the dark blue rubber strap offers a more subdued option.
The Submersible Tourbillon GMT Luna Rossa Experience Edition
Panerai has put forth the Tourbillon, one of the highest expressions of watchmaking expertise, in the form of the Submersible Tourbillon GMT Luna Rossa Experience Edition PAM01405, comprising just 20 pieces and set to debut in July 2024.
The PAM01405 Experience Edition represents a milestone as the first 45 mm Submersible to incorporate the tourbillon complication and marry it with the futuristic appeal of CarbotechTM, a composite material based on carbon fibre. Crafted with a meticulous manufacturing process, CarbotechTM offers superior mechanical properties and resistance to external forces and corrosion. Rigorously tested to meet Panerai’s stringent quality standards, the watch ensures optimal power reserve (four-day) and chronometry, 24-hour GMT function, and a night and day indication.
At the core of this timepiece lies the hand-wound P.2015/T mechanical caliber, a result of three years of dedicated development and eight hours of craftsmanship for the assembly of the movement and tourbillon cage. Compensating for the effects of gravity on the timepiece's accuracy is the patented tourbillon, rotating horizontally every 30 seconds.
Enhancing its connection to the sailing world is the watch's case, intentionally echoing Luna Rossa's boat hull materials. The watch integrates GMT hands, shaped like sails. Its titanium bezel, coated in black DLC, complements the open-worked display, revealing its mechanical construction. Red and white accents enhance legibility and echo Luna Rossa's palette. Super-LumiNova® is illuminated in darkness, while blue and green Super-LumiNova® aids reading under water. Impressive for a high-complication movement is its water resistance of up to 300 metres. Two straps are included: a Luna Rossa bimaterial strap with a red accent and a black rubber strap for a sleek look, complementing the CarbotechTM case.
The Submersible QuarantaQuattro Luna Rossa Ti-CeramitechTM PAM01466 and PAM01543
The Submersible QuarantaQuattro Luna Rossa Ti-CeramitechTM series features two watches that blend advanced technology with high performance. They are the result of seven years of research and development, integrating Ti-CeramitechTM, a revolutionary material inspired by competitive environments.
The aesthetic appeal of these timepieces is further enhanced by details such as the blue sun-brushed dial of PAM01466 and the white matte-grained dial of PAM01543, both adorned with a decal of Luna Rossa and small red second hands. Luminous hands and hour markers ensure legibility even in the depths of the ocean or the darkness of night. The bezel, crafted from machined titanium, ceramised to reveal metal at strategic points, creates a striking contrast of materials, echoing Panerai’s commitment to innovation and craftsmanship. Complementing the timepieces are two strap options: a bimaterial strap featuring a red stripe with Luna Rossa branding and a rubber strap in a uniform blue tone.
At the heart of these watches lies the automatic P.900 movement, housed within a 44 mm Ti-CeramitechTM case. This material, a result of a patented titanium ceramisation process, exhibits a distinctive hue of blue, reminiscent of the open seas. Not only does it provide a striking aesthetic, but it also offers enhanced hardness and durability, making it 44% lighter than steel yet remarkably tough. Water-resistant for up to 500 metres, these watches are versatile companions for aquatic adventures. PAM01466 will be available across all networks, while PAM01543 will be exclusive to boutiques.
Together, these novelties embody Panerai’s dedication to crafting remarkable instruments for the sea through innovation and passion-driven research. These timepieces are indeed set to make waves in the world of luxury watches.
