The discussion also delved into additional aspects, highlighting the brand's vision and innovation.
Edited excerpts from the interview:
GMT India: Panerai’s Watches and Wonders novelties this year include additions to the Luminor Marina collection. What makes these new models stand out?
Alessandro Ficarelli (AF): The new Luminor Marina collection presented at Watches and Wonders 2025 represents an evolution of one of Panerai’s most emblematic lines, blending technical refinements, improved wearability, and signature design elements.
A key highlight is the enhanced water resistance, with the collection now rated for 500 metres, a significant upgrade that reinforces Panerai’s commitment to functional, high-performance tool watches. The introduction of the new P.980 movement brings improved precision and durability, featuring a cross-balance bridge for enhanced stability and a 3.5-day power reserve. The aesthetic refinements include a cleaner dial layout with enlarged bevelled date displays, improved Super-LumiNova® X2, and a new V-shaped bracelet design.
Among the standout references is the Luminor Marina Titanio PAM03325, showcasing Panerai’s expertise in high-tech materials. Crafted from Grade 5 titanium, it offers a strong yet lightweight alternative to steel; it’s paired with an olive-green sun-brushed dial, paying homage to the brand’s military origins.
GMT India: Panerai has always managed to maintain a balance between its Italian heritage and a modern spirit. How has the brand managed to achieve this balance in the new models?
AF: Panerai’s ability to balance Italian heritage with a modern spirit is deeply embedded in both its design philosophy and technical advancements. By staying true to our historic DNA while integrating cutting-edge engineering, we ensure that each timepiece remains both an expression of its past and a tool for today’s modern heroes. A perfect example of this can be seen in the new Luminor Marina collection.
The Italian heritage is reflected in timeless design elements, such as the crown-protecting device with a safety lock, sandwich dial construction, and bold case proportions, which have remained defining features of Panerai since its early days of supplying the Italian Navy. At the same time, the collection embraces a modern spirit through technical refinements. The P.980 movement enhances reliability and precision, and the updated materials, such as titanium, push the boundaries of durability and wearability.

GMT India: Tell us about the new 44 mm Luminor Marina steel. What kind of watch enthusiast would it most appeal to?
AF: Exceptionally robust, the new 44 mm Luminor Marina Steel is a testament to Panerai’s commitment to precision engineering and durability. Crafted from AISI 316LVM - 1.4441 stainless steel, this premium alloy is known for its remarkable strength and superior corrosion resistance, ensuring longevity in even the most demanding conditions. What sets it apart is the low-carbon variant and vacuum arc remelting (VAR) process, which enhances its purity, further improving its resistance to corrosion and wear over time. With a composition of 16-18% chromium, 11-14% nickel, and 2-3% molybdenum, this high-performance material provides exceptional resilience while maintaining an elegant, polished finish.
Designed for those who demand both technical excellence and an enduring aesthetic, the Luminor Marina 44 mm appeals to watch enthusiasts who appreciate robust construction, cutting-edge metallurgy, and timeless design. Whether for collectors drawn to the evolution of Panerai’s iconic Luminor case or for adventurers who require a watch as tough as their pursuits, this timepiece delivers both style and substance. With its blend of Italian craftsmanship, military heritage, and modern innovation, the Luminor Marina 44 mm is an ideal companion for those who seek bold sophistication with unwavering performance.
