Omega Releases its New Seamaster Watch for the 37th Edition of America’s Cup

When it comes to associations or collaborations, it's an undeniable fact that many watchmakers have partnered with at least one sporting discipline. Their timepieces are mostly worn by the stars and the support staff associated with the discipline concerned throughout competitions. This is more or less the story of Omega’s collaboration with America’s Cup as well.

The 37th America's Cup will begin on 22 August 2024. It will consist of different events, leading up to the America's Cup Match in October that year. For the 37th edition of the America's Cup and in partnership with Emirates Team New Zealand, Omega has just revealed the new Seamaster Planet Ocean Deep Black ETNZ Edition (Ref. 215.92.46.51.01.003). This watch marks Omega's fourth stint as the official timekeeper for the competitive sailing event.

The America’s Cup is the oldest international sporting trophy, dating back to 1851. The defending champion of the America’s Cup is Emirates Team New Zealand, representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. All teams, participating in the 37th America’s Cup, will use the AC40s, multi-use foiling monohulls, for sailing and testing purposes. During trials, the AC40, manned by Emirates Team New Zealand, recorded speeds in the “high-40-knot” bracket.

Omega’s new 45.5 mm Seamaster Planet Ocean Deep Black ETNZ Edition gets black ceramic case and lugs. The Swiss timepiece maker has incorporated turquoise-coloured rings into the brushed black ceramic chronograph pushers at 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock, the “He” on the helium escape valve at 10 o’clock, and the OMEGA logo on the crown at 3 o’clock. The watch also comes with a white 60-minute unidirectional ratcheting bezel.

Now let’s talk about the dial, which is crafted from matte black ceramic and brushed with zirconium oxide (ZrO2) to find the right colour. Honouring the pre-race protocol, a countdown indicator rests at 3 o’clock with a flagged start. The indicator’s hand and the subdial ring are in Emirates Team New Zealand logo turquoise. The minute track can be found on the outer periphery of the dial, which gets an Arabic 12 o’clock and a white-to-turquoise gradient central seconds chronograph hand. The brushed steel hour and minute hands have broad-arrow tips and Super-LumiNova. Also, at 9 o’clock, there’s a seconds counter and at 6 o’clock, one can spot a date window with a black background and a white numeral. 

Inside the case is Omega’s in-house Calibre 9900, which is a bit different from the standard 9900 series because of the regatta timing function for the hours and minutes. This METAS-certified Master Chronometer movement offers 60 hours of power reserve and features a co-axial escapement, balance spring, two barrels mounted in series, and a vertical clutch. Dedicated to the kiwi crew, the NAIAD LOCK caseback has an Emirates Team New Zealand logo with turquoise fern and white lettering. Although hidden from view, the movement is wound by a central rotor with arabesque Geneva stripes. The new Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Deep Black ETNZ Edition is worn on a turquoise and black structured rubber strap, with a foldover clasp in black ceramic.
